All Is Vanity

All Is Vanity

Created by Charles A. Gillbert in 1892

This scene of a woman doing some makeup in front of a mirror, looks like a skull from a distance. The title has two meanings : vanity is the name of a dressing table with a mirror, it also means excessive pride in appearance. The message behind the image is : don't worry too much about material things. We'll all be dead in the end.

Heart of Stone

Heart of Stone

Created by Octavio Ocampo

Cover of Cher's album Heart of Stone. This cover was quickly replaced by a normal picture of Cher, because so many people thought it was so ugly. The original cover is now a collector's item.

The Silence of the Lambs

The Silence of the Lambs

Created in 1991

The original artwork for the movie poster shows a Tobacco horn moth with the picture of a skull on it. On closer inspection, the skull is actually three naked women (seven in some versions). There you go, you know something few people do. This was inspired by a Dali artwork - see elsewhere on this page.
