Ambiguous Images

All is Vanity
An ambiguous image shows more than one item at the same time. The most common examples are the wife and the mother-in-law or the vase and the two faces. There are a few different kinds of this thing :
  • In a completely ambiguous image the entire image can be seen in more than one way.
  • If the image requires you to switch between a foreground and background (light and dark), this kind is called a figure/ground illusion.
  • The composite image shows something big made out of smaller things, like male face and nude women. This is also called an archimboldesque.
A very popular variant is the skull theme, like the classic on the right : All is vanity. This lady is looking Death in the eyes.
